Howard is a multifaceted professional with extensive expertise in finance, technology, and equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). His career spans several decades, marked by significant contributions in academia, government policy advice, and leadership positions (spanning capital markets and risk management) within financial institutions both in the UK and the Caribbean. Dr. Haughton’s diverse background and deep commitment to fostering inclusive environments make him a prominent figure in his field.

Howard holds a PhD in Mathematical Computer Science from the University of Wolverhampton. He also earned a Master’s Degree in Mathematical Finance from the University of York and a Master’s level Diploma in Financial Strategy from the University of Oxford, both with distinction.

Howard is a Senior Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London, where he conducts cutting-edge research in quantitative finance, focusing on AI-driven methodologies for financial modelling and risk analysis. He has supervised MSc students in Data Science, guiding them in applying AI and machine learning techniques to address complex financial challenges.

Additionally, he co-developed the MathOCL tool to aid in the formal verification and validation of software code, contributing to advancements in software reliability and safety.

Since 2002, he has advised governments and financial institutions on good governance, sustainable economic development, and risk management. His consultancy work spans both the UK and internationally, where he has been instrumental in implementing inclusive and equitable practices.  Notable examples include his contribution to the development of corporate governance code of conduct for companies listed on the Jamaica Stock Exchange and a similar code for small unlisted organisations.  Whilst developing his consulting practice, Howard also served as a Quantitative and Economic Adviser at the Commonwealth Secretariat, providing strategic advice to member countries on economic policy formulation, risk management strategies, and governance. His quantitative models have helped assess fiscal risks and optimise public sector investments, across several Commonwealth countries.

As the EDI Chair and Council Member at the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), Howard guides the organisation’s EDI strategy. He is responsible for influencing the institution on matters of equity, diversity, and inclusion. His role demands a deep understanding of governance frameworks and compliance issues, enabling him to develop and enact policies that adhere to the highest standards of governance.  His passion for inclusive leadership is also evident in his work with the Diversity Trust. He has developed frameworks for achieving inclusive leadership, enhancing well-being, and empowering staff across various organisations. His educational podcasts and training sessions highlight his ability to articulate complex EDI concepts and advocate for impactful organisational change.

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Haughton has a keen interest in martial arts and athletics, having excelled in both as a youth. He is also a dedicated Rotarian, actively raising funds for social initiatives around the world. His efforts reflect his commitment to making a positive impact on communities and promoting social equity.
