Having known since the age of 8 that she wanted to work in the world of sport, and learning more about the power of using sport as a vehicle for change and social good at 17, Gemma has worked in sport for development for 20 years in a range of settings including education, corporate, National Governing Body, and charity in a variety of roles including research, policy, elite sports academy management, project management, and events.
Gemma is driven to balance her desire for strategic sport development and policy work with supporting and building communities through active engagement on the ground through spots coaching: Gemma has always coached alongside her roles and managed and ran netball clubs, multi sports clubs, and now a small local running club.
She is fueled by the same flame as Nelson Mandela and feels deeply about the power of sport to change the world, and thinks about this quote regularly: “Sports have the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire, the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sports can create hope, where there was once only despair. It is more powerful than governments in breaking down racial barriers. It laughs in the face of all types of discrimination.
