This year’s theme for Black History Month is “Reclaiming Narratives,” and marks a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture.
The Sporting Equals Awards continue to celebrate the outstanding achievements of diverse individuals and organisations, particularly from the Black community, making it a fitting focus for Black History Month.
Cindy Ngamba, was handed the Sportswoman of the Year after becoming the first athlete from the Refugee Olympic Team to win a medal at the Paris 2024 Games, demonstrating resilience and triumph. Her journey inspires others to pursue excellence in sport.

Samuel Reardon was awarded Sportsman of the Year for his outstanding performances on the track, where he continues to shine as a rising star. Reardon’s dedication to his sport and his achievements at such an early age, mark him as one to watch for the future.

Linford Christie OBE, a British sprinting icon, received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his enduring contributions to athletics. As the most decorated British sprinter, Christie’s career not only broke records but also paved the way for future Black athletes. His success and commitment to mentoring young athletes have left a lasting legacy in the world of track and field.

These awardees display the power sport had in challenging barriers and celebrating diversity, making them fitting honourees during Black History Month. Through their perseverance and advocacy, they inspire future generations to break barriers and embrace the power of sport as a tool for change.
