Sporting Equals Statement

As an organisation deeply committed to eradicating racism in sport and fostering inclusive communities through sport and physical activity, Sporting Equals stands firmly against the outbreaks of violence witnessed on the streets across the UK. These riots are not only deeply disturbing but are contrary to the values of unity and respect that sport teaches us.

Yesterday we saw those values come to the fore with many communities coming together to show solidarity.
Sporting Equals has taken the time to reach out to all its Associate Members and wider network and extends its support to all communities affected by these riots. We are here to assist in healing and rebuilding our communities through the power of sport and engagement. Let us collaborate as a sector to channel our energies towards constructive dialogues and actions that reinforce our shared commitment to a respectful and inclusive society.

Condemnation of Incitement
Sporting Equals categorically condemns the encouragement of xenophobia, Islamophobia, fascism and racism by any individuals, especially those in positions of power. It is unacceptable to use one’s influence to foster division and incite violence.

Call for Accountability
We believe that accountability is paramount. Those who have played a role in stoking this unrest must face legal scrutiny and, where appropriate, prosecution. This is crucial not only to serve justice but also to deter future instances of similar conduct.

Our Commitment
In light of these events, Sporting Equals reaffirms its commitment to using sport as a vehicle for positive change. We will continue to work tirelessly to provide opportunities for participation, leadership, and development in sports for all communities, irrespective of background. Our initiatives aim to educate, unite, and inspire individuals and communities towards a more inclusive and equitable society.

Call to Action
We urge all stakeholders, including community leaders, policymakers, and the public, to join us in our efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusivity in sports and beyond. It is through collaboration and collective action that we can overcome the challenges posed by racism and discrimination. In these challenging times, we call on sports clubs, leisure facilities, other public establishments, and employers to be vigilant for potential rises in racist incidents or microaggressions towards their staff or patrons.
